After a record-setting 2019, the Russian travel market faced significant challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mobility restrictions and border closures contributed to the travel industry shrinking by 54% in 2020, with the tour operator and air segments suffering the greatest relative losses.
With case counts rising in mid-2021 and vaccine hesitancy persisting, both inbound and outbound international travel face major challenges. Still, in most sectors, online penetration has increased and is expected to continue rising, with particularly high mobile search use.
