Summary
The unprecedented global health crisis triggered by COVID-19 affected travel markets and consumer behavior worldwide. In Europe, tourism evaporated as the continent became a viral epicenter, leading to significant restrictions. Vacationers took fewer trips and average trip spend declined significantly, though travel remained a highly regarded recreational spend activity. Despite the difficulties, the majority of Europeans surveyed traveled in some capacity, often to local getaways when permitted – reflecting the enduring importance of travel to people’s lifestyles.
This report is based on a comprehensive survey of U.K., France, Germany, Spain and Italy travelers, along with those who planned to travel in 2021. It compares these European markets’ consumer trip-planning and purchasing behavior, including the impact of the pandemic on their 2020 and 2021 travel, as well as their expectations and goals for travel looking forward.
