By all available metrics, the U.S. car rental market exceeded expectations in 2022. Despite inventory, staffing and microchip shortages, the segment grew by 24% year over year, with a bump in online bookings. Previously forecast to only see mild growth, gross bookings exceeded 2019 totals. Daily rates rose to new highs, but given current supply chain constraints and lack of economic relief, the segment anticipates more tepid growth moving forward. While running close to capacity on limited inventory is not a long-term solution to regaining revenue, the car rental segment has managed to reap what benefits it can in an ever-fluctuating financial environments.
