Japan’s travel market is firmly on the path to recovery, with gross bookings surging by 54% to US$63.1 billion in 2022. Domestic demand thrived, and inbound visitors flocked to the country as its borders fully reopened in October 2022 and the Japanese yen depreciated significantly. Travel gross bookings are not anticipated to surpass 2019 totals until after 2026 when viewed in dollar terms. However, when calculated in local currency, full recovery is expected by 2025. Overall, more moderate growth is anticipated going forward, as online distribution (particularly in mobile) continues to gain share.
