Traveler demand in the U.K. hit an all-time high in 2023 according to Phocuswright’s travel research report U.K. Consumer Travel Report 2024. While some economic challenges persist, overall outlook towards future travel also remains largely positive. Here are 5 positive stats that point to a strong U.K. travel market:
- Travel demand among Britons has surged to record levels. More than eight in 10 U.K. adults, 40 million in total, traveled in 2023.
- The uptick in travel incidence was strong across all age groups. Average per-group spend increased by nearly £1K over last year, although average trip frequency remained essentially flat. Most likely, this reflects increasing travel costs, though some may have taken more lavish holidays than before.
- Travel remains the top discretionary spend priority among U.K. adults.
- Significantly more international trips (both within and outside Europe) were reported this year, potentially at the expense of domestic trips.
- In 2023, trip planning timelines continued to extend and elongate with nearly six in 10 now beginning planning more than three months out.
Phocuswright’s U.K. Consumer Travel Report 2024, based on a survey of British leisure travelers, provides a comprehensive range of data and analysis on the trip lifecycle for consumers in the U.K.
Key questions answered include:
- What does the average U.K. traveler look like? How many trips do they take per year, where do they go, with whom, for how long, and how much do they spend?
- What resources - online and offline - do British travelers use to research, plan and book their trips?
- How do preferences differ across age groups?
- How do travelers make decisions about various elements (e.g., air, hotel and activities) of their trips?
- What role does social media play in U.K. consumers’ travel planning activities?
- What is the sentiment towards future travel? What changes, if any, do European travelers intend to make regarding their future travel?
